New Bike! - September 02, 2008

I ordered a new bike with some birthday money I got a couple of weeks ago. It's a Big Easy Deuce made by K2.

I rode the three speed version model a couple of weeks ago and liked it. I've been wanting a new bike with a little more of an "adult" (translated: old guy) profile. Then a week or so ago I was riding with Garrett at an offroad bike park and took a fall when my chain broke - the "last straw".

The industry calls bikes of this type a "comfort" bike, which means that it has a big seat and more upright posture when riding. Not quite a "granny" bike, but more a "Cruiser" but with 21 speeds. It is a wild departure from my mid-aggressive mountain bike I've had since my mid-20's, but I'm not in my 20's anymore and am a long way from climbing those mountain bike trails I did back in the day. These days, I'm much more apt to hit a paved bike trail on the riverbank or a quick trip to the park through suburbia. The days of bumps, jumps, boulders and creek crossings will be shared only vicariously through the kids.

FedEx reports that it was just delivered to my local bike shop. I sure hope they call soon - the weather for this weekend is predicted to be awesome for an inaugural ride.

Facebook - Not just for kids - September 02, 2008

In the spirit of my Twitter announcement, I have also joined Facebook where I already have 4 "Friends." Compared to Twitter, where I have 7 "Followers."

The sad part is that 4 of those "Followers" are fictional characters.

After a Long Absence - October 23, 2007

MojoMark is back online - with a snazzy new seasonally appropriate design and a funky homegrown content management system!

There are lots of reasons for the long absence. Primarily burnout. I just didn't have the desire to keep it up. I also thought that the quality of what I was putting out was not very good. Maybe it was not good in the beginning, but I felt that it was getting worse.

But what I found recently is that I've been missing it. Several times lately I've thought to myself "that'd be good for the blog".

There are still lots of pieces that are not in place - comments, trackbacks, RSS, etc, and a number of items in the content system to fix. But the big parts are in place, so I can act on any inspiration and write up those "blog worthy" events.

Hopefully, I'll make this a habit, keep it short and tight, while improving the overall quality of the content.

I am Part of the Technorati - November 22, 2006

Technorati recently reported that they track over 57 million blogs, and that the number of blogs doubles every 230 days. But only 55% are considered active - making at least 1 post in the last 90 days.

This post is only to keep me "active", because in all reality - it's not.

First Day of School - Redeaux - September 07, 2006

Sara had her first day at Pre-K on Monday. Now, I spoke the other day about my embarassment that my mom put me through with Day 1 photos.

Marie has taken it to a whole new level. In addition to the neighbors, the whole world wide web, Marie actually made her pose in front of the sign at the pre-school

Killer Mold - August 31, 2006

The mold report came back as expected - the bad kind. That's pretty much going to kill the deal for the house. My feet were getting a little chilly anyway - this just gives us a legal excuse to jump.

It's sad though. Marie and I had already mentally began to customize the house. I also feel a little sad for the owners, who didn't appear to have any knowledge of the danger growing in their attic. Now the value of their house has plummetted, and the cost to remediate the "extensive" growth I'm sure will be expensive.

If they do the remediation, then we might still be interested in the house later on - after a full inspection of course. But we can't continue in the transaction as-is, and certainly not at this price. Especially as prices continue to soften.

The good part is that we've filled up the garage with stuff, and we are still living in the house with very little disruption! I can't believe how much junk we have that we don't need. This has been an interesting exercise despite the disappointment.

Another Day Older and Deeper in Debt - August 18, 2006

That was the line stuck in my head yesterday as I celebrated my birthday. I was older, but the debt part didn't compute.

Today, they accepted our offer to buy our "house in the country" - 3.8 acres 2 miles from downtown Sherwood.

Not today, but soon I will be "Deeper in Debt".

Now we've got to get our house ready to sell. YIKES!

Things That Bug Me (first in a series) - August 07, 2006

I was in line at an ice cream stand at the Antique Powerland Museum for their "Great Oregon Steam Up" event. Two people were in front of me. The vendor had 8 flavors. The first guy ordered his cone, paid for it and stepped away. Now, service was not lightning fast - it was a big cone, the guy was not in a hurry, and change was required. Not a problem.

The next guy in line says out loud "I'm not sure what flavor I want".

Dude, you've been in line for a couple minutes. Was that not enough time? When it's your turn in line, and people are behind you, you should be ready to order. It's not like the selection was 31 Flavors and 15 different toppings.

Then to make it worse... he asks "who makes the ice cream?", and "where are they located?"

Would that have changed your mind? JUST ORDER ALREADY.

Finally he did - as my blood pressure was topping out.

I think I'm getting crankier as I get older (my birthday is next week).

NFL Football Pool - Ready to Rock! - August 22, 2005

My NFL Football Pool is now open for registration. I'm hosting it at my RotoMojo site so click on over, register, sign up for the NFL Pro Pick'em Game, and then announce your arrival and superior intelligence on the "Smack Exchange". Anybody can play for the $60 fee (that's $3.52 per week) and the more people who play, the bigger the overall pot will become.

NFL Football Pool - August 17, 2005

FootballSeveral years ago I got involved in a really unique NFL pool. When the previous commissioner decided against doing it again, I decided to take over and built a web application to get the picks and publish standings. That was three years ago, and I've been running it on this site ever since.

This year I'll be running the pool again, but I'm going to push it off to another server. It will be the same software (with a few tweeks here and there), but a new site. When that site is ready, I'll announce it here and send an email to everybody who has played in the past.

Anybody can play - last year we had 106 players. Entry fees will remain the same, $60 for the entire season (that's only $3.52/week). If you are the high scorer for the week you can win your entry fee back! You can also win by being in the top 20 overall. Last year's 1st place finisher picked up almost $700!, 20th place got their entry fees back. Considering the weekly winners and the overall, 35 of the 106 players gathered up some winnings.

If you want to run a private game, email me at markj at mojomark dot com - I can accomodate that too.

So are you ready to play? Here's how the pool is played....

The Pro-Pick'em Bonus Game allows the player to pick 12 NFL games each week. Each game is ranked from 12 points to 1. IF the team you pick wins the game (no point spread required), you get the number of points specified. In addition, you can specify one of those games to be a "bonus" game. If that team wins, you get double the points.

Sounds simple eh?...

Here's the catch : if the team loses or ties, you get a negative point score equal to how you assigned the points. No big deal you say? Catch #2 - you can only bonus a team that is playing against a team with a .500 or better record. No picking against the Cardinals each week !
