Wildest Police Videos - Educational? - December 05, 2007

Marie and I have had some discussions about whether "America's Wildest Police Videos" are appropriate for my almost 8 year old son to watch. I'm not that opposed because the narration by Sheriff Brunnel always emphasizes that its bad to run from the police. Marie wants to shelter the children from reality and thinks that the show will promote that kind of behavior.

The 1/2 hour episodes always show some kuncklehead (or collection of knuckleheads) trying to evade the police and wrecking their car, or having the drug sniffing dog scratching at their "empty" trunk. The Sheriff makes some snide remark about how inevitable their capture is, and that they will have fun in jail.

So, in short - bad guys do bad stuff, get caught and go to jail. Sounds educational to me, "Scared Straight" with high speed chases and car crashes all wrapped up in a syndicated 30 minute episode.

Just after Thanksgiving, though I was wondering if maybe Marie was right.

Garrett: Daddy, what if we had a turkey for Thanksgiving and it was stuffed with marijuana?

Me, after picking up my jaw from the floor: Why would you say that. Do you know what marijuana is?

Garrett: Well, it's the stuff bad guys have in their cars and it's poison!

My faith in Sheriff Brunel is restored.

Things Kids Say - vN+1 - December 04, 2007

It was a drizzly, cold day in December (what a shocker!), and Marie was out doing one of those all day weekend things she does leaving me alone with both kids. Being the good Dad I am, we went out to eat.

On the way to our next adventure, we happened to drive past one of those folks standing on the side of the street enticing shoppers into the dark despair of the "store closing - everything must go" 1 time only sale - the same sale that happened last month.

This person was different though - he was dressed in a Santa suit. Now that didn't strike me as unusual, this was in fact, December. But this guy really didn't have the Santa vibe going. He was thin, young, with a 9am shadow that hadn't been touched since the 5 o'clock shadow the night before.

Sara: Hey Look! It's Santa!

Garrett: That's not Santa. That's just some geek in a suit.

Another Installment of Things Kids Say - December 03, 2007

Garrett is a pretty bright kid. He's almost 8, and has a pretty good vocabulary for a second grader. He was "speech delayed" as a toddler, but as Mom regularly points out, is making up for that.

The other day we drove past a policeman, and with Sara in the car, we began a discussion of their job.

Sara: The policeman works on Saturday?

Me: Yes, honey. The police work every day to keep us safe.

Garrett: You mean they never sleep?

Me: Sure they do Garrett. Some policemen work during the day, others work at night.

Garrett: They must be nocturnal.

Pumpkin Patch - November 04, 2007

Garrett and Sara at the pumpkin patch with Pumpkin Ridge in the backgroundThis year we went out to the Lakeview Farms pumpkin patch out in North Plains, just south of one of my favorite golf courses - apparently not coincendentally named - Pumpkin Ridge.

Dragons menace the barge! They have a corn maze, a train that takes you out to the patch, and a boat that will bring you back across their watering hole. As the boats motor across the waterway, mechanical dragons rise menacingly and even a shark pops out of the water as if this was Universal Studios northwest. Frankly I was a little concerned about whether the motors on the barges would hold together, but apparently there were no mechanical wildlife induced boating mishaps this year.

Sara takes a ride in the caterpillar Garrett takes a ride in the caterpillarThey also have a little caterpillar ride for the kiddies. This caterpillar is a 4x4 ATV pulling 55 gallon barrels with a hole cut out and attached to trailer hitches.

Kind of rickety if you ask me but, what's a parent to do? Say no?

All Hallows Eve - November 01, 2007

The trick or treaters were out in force last night. Most of the kids were well behaved and did the right thing. As candy giver, I demand proper etiquette. Which means they have to say "Trick or Treat" (a "Happy Halloween" will suffice) and be in a costume. Sometimes I have to ask what the costume is, but anybody just trolling the neighborhood for candy gets the pink tootsie rolls - Yuck!

Garrett was in the Power Ranger outfit, and Sara went with the Daphne (from Scooby Doo) outfit, but without the go-go boots and the pink wig. That was a departure from the school party where she went in glittery cocktail dress. I guess the nighttime requires the shorter skirt.

The weather cooperated and it was a nice, although cool evening for a walk. The knocks at the door started a little after 6pm and finished up just after 8. I think that timeframe is pretty consistent with prior years even though the lack of the normal "fall back" time change has usually happened by now.

The candy haul was pretty good, but I'm starting to wonder if our chosen handouts are inappropriate for the neighborhood. We gave out mini-tootsie pops and tootsie rolls which varied significantly with the brand name chocolate bars that ended up in Garrett and Sara's collection.

Now the real trick is for me to sneak into the kids collections and get my own treats!

2007 Soccer - October 28, 2007

Sara does her pre-game warmup. Checking out all the boys and looking super-cute Both kids played Soccer this fall with the Southside Soccer. Garrett played at the U8 level (2nd graders) and Sara played with the Kindergarten group.

To varying extents, the kids had fun - Sara clearly more that Garrett. Being it was Garrett's first experience with Soccer, he was definitely a weaker player than some of the other boys on the team. I think he'd get better with experience, but like his first experience with baseball, I'm not sure he completely "got" the sport.

Sara on the other, always the more aggressive child, jumped in with both feet and really did well. I hope she keeps it up because it was nice to see her running, trying hard, and improving in each game.

Here's a really poor collection of pictures of the kids playing...
