Play with me. - November 29, 2002

Garrett is becoming wise to my ways. The other day he came to me and said "Daddy run!". What he wants is to be chased around the staircase. On this particular morning, I had just finished my shower and came downstairs without pants (they were in the dryer). As I sat down, Garrett came to me with his request. My response was, "I can't run, I don't have any pants on". Apparently satisfied with the answer he trotted away. Soon I heard a little pitter patter on the bedroom floor above, and then he came back downstairs and presented me with a pair of sweatpants. "Daddy Run!". How could I refuse? We probably did 10 laps screaming and giggling each time around.

Outsmarted by a 2 1/2 year old..... I suppose I should get used to it.

The Finish Line - November 27, 2002

I'm having trouble getting this site finished. I don't seem to have the motivation lately. Most of my focus has gone into the SPC (Sports Pool Challenge) site. That site has run pretty well with the exception of a memory leak in Oracle. Im not sure if its Oracle, the Apache plug in, or my code but it eats memory until the system halts. While I don't think this new website will be "hammered" with visits, this shouldn't be happening.

My options to fixing this leak are to patch the Apache processes, upgrade the database to 9i, or build a linux server which may provide more stability. Although I don't know crap about linux right now, and buying a new computer is not in the near future.

Anyway, I need to get this thing complete, get into the habit of writing before this year's Christmas letter goes out. That event usually generates some traffic to the site.

Thank You - November 27, 2002

We got the kids flu shots the other day. However, because they are young, it's given in two doses about two weeks apart. We just got the 2nd shot the other day. The kiddies reacted much like you would expect, tears, screams. But the funniest part was Garrett. As he was crying and being comforted by Mom, the nurse who admnistered the shot was leaving the room. Marie and I both said "thanks, goodbye", and Garrett looked at her with a total "I'm in agony" face and screamed "Thank You"!.

He is so polite.

Kiddie Videos - November 07, 2002

Being good parents of the new millenium, we have a drawer full of "Kiddie" videos that we use as in many different situations. Current inventory is 38 tapes consisting of Sesame Street, Barney, Baby Mozart, the Wiggles, a smattering of "classics" (from the '80's and earlier), and Veggie Tales.

While a good selection is usually a good thing, inevitably Garrett gets hooked on one, and it gets requested constantly. Currently it is Veggie Tales by Big Idea Productions. Veggie Tales are all about talking, singing, and dancing vegetables. But if you read their Mission Statement on the website, the core purpose of the organization is To markedly enhance the moral and spiritual fabric of our society through creative media.

I'm not the most spiritual person in the world, but two songs are stuck in my head that don't seem to conform to this purpose:
The bunny/
The bunny/
Whoa! I ate the bunny/
now I'm sick in the head

And my personal favorite
We are the pirates, who don't do anything /
we just sit at home, and lie around/
and if you ask us, to do anything /
we'll just tell you we don't do anything

Happy Birthday Dad - November 07, 2002

Dad would have been 67 today, well into retirement, and probably driving around the country in an RV with Mom.

I hope you are enjoying watching the kids grow. Garrett definitely has your spirit. I think he'd say Hi to anybody!

Aftermath of Halloweeen - November 05, 2002

Due to the lack of TnTr's last Thursday, we had a reasonable collection of the Tootsie cocktail leftover and conveniently located within arms reach of the computer. Despite my efforts, with a bit of guilt, I finished off all the goodness that is Tootsie.

Once that was done I resolved to get back on the diet wagon and stay away from the carbs. I didn't anticipate that the enemy would come from within and deal another setback. Marie went to Target on Sunday and passed the "clearance" table. What do you think was there? Halloween candy.... "It was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up" she said. Nestle Creamy Caramel Coffins at $.65 per bag, and your standard Candy Corn at $.15 ! That was Sunday, today is Tuesday and the coffins are almost all gone, and will be before bedtime tonight. (they ARE so yummy though.. how can they be bad for you?).
