Sharp Cheddar X - January 30, 2004

Cheddar X IconJohnny Huh, the creator/moderator of Cheddar X "thought that it would be fun to have a bitter and cynical sarcasm based Cheddar X" this week. That's just swell. But be careful what you wish for Master Huh. I've always felt that the internet needed more "bitter and cynical sarcasm".

  1. What sucked today?
It's too early for today. What sucked yesterday? Getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist, and I didn't win in MisterCrunchy's Reverse Survivor Writing Contest.
  2. How are ya doing?
My back still aches, Sara's got an ear infection, her two year molars are cutting through, and her nose is a river of snot. Thanks for asking.
  3. Got any plans for the weekend?
duh. It's Super Bowl Sunday. Beer, Food, Indigestion, and probably not winning any money with the $12 I spent on 2 pools. Survivor All-stars start Sunday too - that should be fun.
  4. Hey, is that a new haircut?
What is this a Viagra commercial? No, and I haven't lost any weight either.
  5. What's up?
My cholesterol will be on Sunday for sure.
  6. Spare some change?
NO. Because when people give you change it empowers you to keep coming back and begging for more. Get a job. Get some Self-esteem, and for chrissake a shower.
  7. What is it with kids today?
Teenage girls sure look a lot different than when I was that age. It must be the hormones in the food causing premature maturing - or maybe it's the wonderbra.

More Superbowl Pool - January 29, 2004

I'm a little better off in this pool than the other one I'm in. Here are my numbers in the Superbowl pool at work (10 by 10 square, numbers picked at random, last digit of the team's score, payout each quarter):

Team$2 Pool$3 PoolUPDATE:
Winners
Patriots438652
Carolina893259

The $2 pool pays $30/qtr, $110 final. The $3 pool pays $50/qtr, $150 final. I think I'm better off in the $2 pool, but it makes the game much more fun to watch when I've got something to root for since I really don't care who wins.

I Feel Good, da na na na na na na - January 29, 2004

But he don't look so good.

Adding to my ongoing collection of celebrity mug shots, James Brown, the "Godfather of Soul" gives us one for the archives.

The GodfatherJames Brown was released from jail Thursday on a domestic violence charge and was told not to contact the wife he's accused of pushing to the floor.

Brown said "I love her very much."

Last month, Brown was honored at the Kennedy Center as "one of the most influential musicians of the past 50 years."

Heh! Get down. uh.

Watchout for Dangerman - January 29, 2004

Some people call those little iconic people that illustrate all sorts of consumer product, environmental hazards and social admonisments "dangerman." Now they can be immortalized on the web (at least until the domain name expires).

I have camera, and will travel. So in my travels, I'll be looking out for him.

Quotes of Note - January 27, 2004

JaX, a participant in my writing class posted the following quote and I thought it deserved some space here for me to remember.

"A great deal of talent is lost to the world for want of a little courage. Every day sends to their graves obscure men and women whose timidity prevented them from making a first effort."

Sydney Smith, English Essayist and Preacher, (1771-1845)

Chedder X - The Cheesiest - January 24, 2004

Cheddar X is a web meme that asks a group of questions on an almost weekly basis. They propose a much more interesting set of questions than the old Friday 5, of which I did a couple. Questions are supposed to be up on Thursdays. So, I'll start doing this for awhile and see if I enjoy it.

Questions and Answers in the extended entry.

Where Do You Stand? - January 24, 2004

With all the election coverage lately, I've been listening a lot to the Democrats and the process to choose the best one to go up against Bush. I've typically voted Republican, but lately the policies of the Bush Administration are getting a little too far to the right.

So in my travels I happened upon Halfass (written by "Scott Partee is a technology consultant, husband, writer and man of good cheer residing in Atlanta, Georgia" - strangely familiar except for the Georgia part) and he had a link to AOL's Presidential Match survey.

"Ok, cool" I thought, a simple little site to tell me where they all stand on the issues, and where I stand in comparison.

Turns out, I'm a bandwagoner

  1. John Kerry - 100%
  2. Joe Lieberman - 97%
  3. Wes Clark - 94%
  4. Edwards - 89%
  5. Dean - 88%
  6. Sharpton - 79%
  7. Kucinich - 74%
  8. President Bush - 66%

Holy Crap!...... Sorry Mom. I've apparently grown up to be a Democrat.

But I'm not convinced yet. I looked a little closer and I don't think I really agreed with Kerry on 100% of his opinions. Although, I did disagree with many of Dubya's positions. So many I'm not a Democrat just yet. How about a "Republocrat"?

Captain Kangaroo - Reruns only - January 23, 2004

The CaptainCaptain Kangaroo, Dies at 76. I used to watch the Captain as a kid. I don't remember many specifics of the show, or what time of day it was on or anything. I do remember that I thought he was old - grandfatherly is what some of the articles say - but that must have been 30+ years ago. It seems that his character acted older than he really was. Odd for TV that you really play into an older character.

Lots of other bloggers are opining about the loss of a childhood icon. They must be much older than me. Personally, I've got no such emotions, so I guess I wasn't that attached to him.

So, you might ask why do I post about his passing?

I think if you take the Captain Kangaroo promo picture above, give him a jet black flattop hairstyle, and dump the moustache, and a few pounds - he would look just like my Dad.

Superbowl Pool - January 23, 2004

Sometimes the luck of the sports gods just don't seem to smile upon you. Here are my numbers in the Superbowl pool at work (10 by 10 square, numbers picked at random, last digit of the team's score, payout each quarter, $3/square):

Patriots 6, Carolina 2

Patriots 5, Carolina 5

Those numbers are brutal. I'll be rooting for some safety's and missed extra points to get me some possibilities.

And I'll be watching and rating my favorite commercials.

Physical Therapy - Ahhhhhhhh - January 21, 2004

I've been suffering from some back pain for about 3 weeks now - probably as a result of sledding down the street on New Year's Day. I don't think it was sledding by itself, but probably more related to hauling the 70 lbs of children up the icy hill.

I've had back pain before, but it has usually cleared up in a few days. This one has been a little different so I went to see the Doctor. He prescribed some muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory's, a little ice, a little heat, and some Physical Therapy.

When I made the appointment (the office was just upstairs from the Doctor), I had got a glimpse of my therapist. I recall thinking at the time, "she looks pretty tough". Leading up to today, I was a little apprehensive, thinking that it might actually hurt. I envisioned her ordering me around with a Austrian/Schwarzenegger accent

"C'mon ya girlie man. Cahn't ya touch ya toes? Due eeet. Due eeet now!"

After my first appointment today, I now know that I really like therapy. "Maureen" was actually quite nice, helpful, very strong, and gave me a reeeaaallly nice deep lower back massage. Yeaghhh Baby! (by the way - this is hilarious - it's a sound file - click it and crank it! fyi:created by Lileks, found at Allah's)

Then she layed me out on the bed with my legs on a pillow, put a hot pack on the bed, positioned under my back, and turned the lights down low (sounds like a start to a romance novel) and let me lay there for some time. My goodness it was relaxing. I could surely get used to that!

Unfortunately, the Dr. specified "up to 6 appointments until better." Could it be wrong to fake pain and get my full allotment?
