Home Stretch - February 28, 2005
The weekend, was fruitful.
- REBO Manager code was completed and migrated to production. The "storefront" site still has some work to be done and content to be developed, but that will be built in the next couple of weeks.
- Stupid f'n pocket door on rental unit #1 replaced and finished.
- Two rental applications approved, move in dates will be nearly immediate. 1 still pending approval, but looks ok.
- Patio cleaned.
- Rose bushes planted.
- Sunshine worshipped.
- Barbeque cleaned, gassed up, and tested.
Four more days to prepare for new client implementation. Tonight I'll test my configuration scripts on the development server, and see where I am at. Assuming all goes well, then I'll need to do the connfiguration in production, then maybe create some basic documentation to leave behind after training is complete on Friday.
Marie heads south on Thursday for the weekend, so it's Mr. Mom for me starting that night. I should start planning the events calendar right now to keep them all busy. I know that there will not be any late nights, considering the kiddies are getting up before 7am and I'll be all alone.
Should be fun!
Rains / Pours - February 24, 2005
As I noted in the last post, I signed my first paying client (technically they sign next friday when we go-live) last week for my software business. A 45 minute presentation and they said "I'll guess we'll just have to write you a check". That was way cool. Serious confirmation that the package is impressive, spoken by somebody who had never seen it before. They also said that "everybody needs this - not just in Portland, but everywhere", which really pumped up my ego and the calculator in my brain to figure out how I can afford that 56 inch plasma TV.
Now I need to make the code do what I always knew it would have to do if I did get some more clients, but didn't have the time to do. Specifically, ensuring proper security and segregation of data between clients when sharing a single database. My business model will be as an "Application Service Provider" or ASP. The clients all access the same website, and through configuration and security, only have access to their data. What this means is that every query in the database has to be touched to make sure that only their data is returned, and even if they were to hack the URL to get at a record they shouldn't see, the system will deny their request.
I committed to 13 days to go-live, and now with 7 days left, I feel that the coding is 60% complete, leaving only intense negative testing to commence. This doesn't leave much room for anything else - epecially with this pesky "day job" of mine.
So I'm heads down on the computer, and now - the phone has been ringing like crazy with potential renters for our 4-plex, where we recently lowered the rent. We have two units available (one has been empty since July) but only 1 is ready to rent. I've got about 4-5 hours of work to do in the other one. And then, #4 is moving out this weekend too - so some more time will be needed to rehab that unit. Since we've got demand at this price point, I'm hoping that we'll not have any more vacancies for a while.
I'm Having One of those 'Holy Crap - Now What' Moments - February 17, 2005
I am an optimistic software developer. When I build something, I think "everyone should want this." Back in September I launched On The Mark Technologies, LLC with an application developed with a "pro-bono" (non-revenue) customer. Today, in my first sales call to another prospective customer, I made my first sale.
And they want it live in two weeks!
Today is a good day. I will treat myself to an ice cream cone.
Tomorrow, and the next 13, will be... um... busy.
