2006 Dead Pool - Roster Submitted - December 20, 2005

I submitted my roster today for the 2006 Dead Pool. The Dead Pool is a game where you pick 15 people with some claim of celebrity and if they kick the bucket in the year, you get points based on their age subtracted from 125. Sick and twisted? yes. Sometimes entertaining, absoulutely.

2006 will be my third year in the pool. In 2004, nobody on my roster died. Not that that was unusual, just a testament to bad pick strategy and no researrch.

In 2005 - so far, I've done much better. I went with some low hanging fruit, and they paid off. The Pope, Judge Rehnquist, and Rosa Parks all died in 2005 ranking me in the top 25 (out of 100+ players). While much better than 2004, still a whopping 600 plus points behind the leader - who apparently is the grim reaper himself.

One of the things I did this year that I regretted, is tweeking my roster too much. My 2004 roster had Johnny Carson on it. Sadly, he died this year, and I took him off of my 2005 roster.

This year's roster (which I will hide until 1-January), has many of the same people on it as last year, and a couple of changes based on information gathered this year.

This year's Dead Pool also has a new requirement to blog about each of the picks at least once per quarter. I lobbied for less, but this is the rule. Any pick not blogged about is lost. So, I've committed to at least 60 blog posts on the Dead Pool site this year. That's about 40 more posts than I made on this blog in 2005.

Sad Day in MojoMark Land - December 14, 2005

Today is one of "those" days where reality and vanity clash, and forcing my 40ish self to accept the things that cannot be changed.

In order to qualify for purchase, my hair care products must now boldly specify their SPF rating.

Disappointment Avoided - December 12, 2005

It's no secret that Garrett is a train fan. Sara is also interested, and I'm a fan. So, we decided to take a ride on the Holiday Express next weekend. This is a special promotion put on by the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation - protectors of two mammoth legacy steam engines owned by the City of Portland.

We've be building this up for the kids as a special outing; how exciting and fun it was going to be etc.

Imagine the horror when we see on the news that it derailed.

The SP 4449 and SP&S 700 both went on the ground this afternoon on the first run of the Holiday Express trains. They were apparently making their first southbound trip and while negotiating one of the curves rolled the outside rail over. All passenger cars remained on the rail and were towed south by one of Dick Samuel's switch engines. Passengers were bussed back to OMSI.

A quick trip the their website tells me that all further excursions have been cancelled.

So we start the process of telling the kids that the Holiday Express would be cancelled. Tears were avoided, but since we have the layout in the garage, I think they understand what a "derailment" is.

But today, they say that all things are back to normal. HOORAY! I think we'll spring it on them as a surprise.....
