Killer Mold - August 31, 2006
The mold report came back as expected - the bad kind. That's pretty much going to kill the deal for the house. My feet were getting a little chilly anyway - this just gives us a legal excuse to jump.
It's sad though. Marie and I had already mentally began to customize the house. I also feel a little sad for the owners, who didn't appear to have any knowledge of the danger growing in their attic. Now the value of their house has plummetted, and the cost to remediate the "extensive" growth I'm sure will be expensive.
If they do the remediation, then we might still be interested in the house later on - after a full inspection of course. But we can't continue in the transaction as-is, and certainly not at this price. Especially as prices continue to soften.
The good part is that we've filled up the garage with stuff, and we are still living in the house with very little disruption! I can't believe how much junk we have that we don't need. This has been an interesting exercise despite the disappointment.
Another Day Older and Deeper in Debt - August 18, 2006
That was the line stuck in my head yesterday as I celebrated my birthday. I was older, but the debt part didn't compute.
Today, they accepted our offer to buy our "house in the country" - 3.8 acres 2 miles from downtown Sherwood.
Not today, but soon I will be "Deeper in Debt".
Now we've got to get our house ready to sell. YIKES!

There are moments in my life as a dad that I cherish. Yesterday was one of those moments - the first Father/Son trip to a Major League Baseball Game.
I've always loved going to baseball games ever since I was a kid. There is so much to experience, so much to see that baseball games on TV barely measure up.
One of the best things about going to a game is that moment where the entire playing field comes into view. The lush green of the perfectly flat playing field, mowed to perfection to generate the alternating checkerboard of light and dark hues. The stark contrast from the lush green outfield to the powdery soft infield dirt is interrupted by perfectly straight white lines leading to the towering yellow foul poles.
With Safeco Field's roof open to a clear blue sky, the background of dark green seats only seemed to make the colors even more vibrant.
I'm not sure Garrett will remember the feeling, but I did watch his face as he grinned ear-to-ear mouthing the word "wow".
I'll remember it though.
Things That Bug Me (first in a series) - August 07, 2006
I was in line at an ice cream stand at the Antique Powerland Museum for their "Great Oregon Steam Up" event. Two people were in front of me. The vendor had 8 flavors. The first guy ordered his cone, paid for it and stepped away. Now, service was not lightning fast - it was a big cone, the guy was not in a hurry, and change was required. Not a problem.
The next guy in line says out loud "I'm not sure what flavor I want".
Dude, you've been in line for a couple minutes. Was that not enough time? When it's your turn in line, and people are behind you, you should be ready to order. It's not like the selection was 31 Flavors and 15 different toppings.
Then to make it worse... he asks "who makes the ice cream?", and "where are they located?"
Would that have changed your mind? JUST ORDER ALREADY.
Finally he did - as my blood pressure was topping out.
I think I'm getting crankier as I get older (my birthday is next week).
Rockstar: Week 5 - August 02, 2006
Here's my wrap up of this week's shows.
Patrice does "Higher Ground" with Tommie Lee on drums and a new spikey hairdo. Good energy, decent vocals.
Josh does the reggae themed "Santeria" - definitely a strength style for him, but not very "hard rock".
Dilana does "Can't Get Enough" really well. Her vocal style fit the song well and she put on a hell of a show. She's definitely the one to beat in this competition.
Toby does a version of "Pennyroyal Tea" - another Nirvana song. He's a natural on stage.
Zayra does "867-5309/Jenny" from Tommy Tutone. For once she does something that's not totally awful - at least in the beginning. By halfway she started to suck again. This girl is crazy on stage, even the guys were flabergasted.....
Magni sings the Coldplay song "Clocks". His stagework tonight was pretty subdued as I really think he had to focus on the song - lots of high notes probably out of his range.
Jill does "Don't Forget About Me". This isn't your "Breakfast Club" version either. It's a little slower, a little harder. Some of the notes were off, but she's really working the stage well.
Ryan - "Losing My Religion" solo on the piano. Wow. Very Nice. A real change of pace and he nailed it.
Lukas - "Celebrity Skin". He spent a lot of the song facing away from the camera. What's up with that. Sounds like he was not remembering the lyrics. Sucked.
Storm Large does a 180 from last week with a pop'y version of "Changes". I thought this was a performance that really shows her vocal skills. Really nice.
Dana - "Baba O'Reilly". Pretty good, but I think the facial expressions of intensity are a little forced, but she did well except for the low notes, which I think she missed them.
* * * * *
Bottom three? Zayra (again), Lukas and Magni.
Best? Tough call, Dilana, Storm and Ryan were really good - encore could come from any one of them and it would be good.
The Elimination Show
Encore goes to Ryan.
First of the Bottom Three is Jill. She does Heart's "Alone". She really can sing - songs she knows and has done before. That was a really good song for her.
Next is Dana, who choose "House of the Rising Sun", a powerful song that requires some really good range. She could have done lots to really work the stage at the end, but she stayed pretty mellow.
Last is Patrice, beating out Zayra somehow? For her battle, she's going to do "Eternal Life". She did the song well but I thought her stage act went dead.
Eliminated? A tough choice for the guys I think. While none of these three will make it to the end, none of them I think deserve to go home this soon. Somebody's got to go however. And tonight, it's Dana Goodbye young'n. Her pipes and her good looks make her a pretty good bet she may surface in the future. Put her in a slinky dress and I'd pay to see her in a torchy piano bar.
