Jellyfish Pays - October 29, 2007

On the 18th of October I was working late and just had the Jellyfish smack show on in the background. The outwit pot was growing, so with the Mindstorm SwakSmack Firefox extension running, it tells me when it's time to play.

So as usual I opt in. But this time I actually get picked. This is my third time in about 8 months I've been picked - never won.

But this time I hit it.

$140 free money.

This is not a joke. I just got the check this weekend.

You can win too. Just sign up here, and tell them MojoMark sent you!

2007 Soccer - October 28, 2007

Sara does her pre-game warmup. Checking out all the boys and looking super-cute Both kids played Soccer this fall with the Southside Soccer. Garrett played at the U8 level (2nd graders) and Sara played with the Kindergarten group.

To varying extents, the kids had fun - Sara clearly more that Garrett. Being it was Garrett's first experience with Soccer, he was definitely a weaker player than some of the other boys on the team. I think he'd get better with experience, but like his first experience with baseball, I'm not sure he completely "got" the sport.

Sara on the other, always the more aggressive child, jumped in with both feet and really did well. I hope she keeps it up because it was nice to see her running, trying hard, and improving in each game.

Here's a really poor collection of pictures of the kids playing...

How to Make the Internet Better - October 26, 2007

More speed.

Pretty simple. I've been a DSL subscriber for a long time - May of 2000 I think. For the first 4 or 5 years, it worked great. My connection speed was good, it was always on, and since I spend a lot of time online, I was happy.

About two years ago Verizon went around the neighborhood and planted fiber lines to all the houses. I was excited, but was not willing to be the first in the 'hood to get it. I'll let somebody else work with Verizon to get the bugs worked out.

About a year or so ago, our DSL modem died, and Verizon billed me to replace it. Since then, the DSL connection became unreliable. Frequent (twice a week on average) outages that, while only requiring a restart of the modem, was very annoying. Just when you need to find something online, it goes out.

For a number of reasons, primarily is that I got something in the mail, I recently switched to the fiber connection and I am definitely a happy customer.

Here is my speed test results from Speakeasy (connecting to the Seattle server).

Sweeeeet. Online pr0n just got waaaaaaay better! (just kidding Mom!)

Just out of curiosity, I ran the same test from work...

I think I'm going to stay home more often!

Finishing the Basics - October 25, 2007

I'm still working out some of the basics of the blog display system. I've finished the comment module, both getting new comments and displaying the previous ones. One thing I did differently on this incarnation of the site is integrate the comments, and the comment form with the blog entry, and display them with a little CSS and Javascript. Now clicking on the "Comments" link will show all previous comments, and the comment entry form.

I've also finished up with the archive retrieval processes. This wasn't that big of a deal, but what made it fun was to do "paging" when the results exceed what I show on the page (currently 10 entries).

Another thing I did differently here is not group the entries by day. Previously I had a heading for the day, and then I'd show all entries on that day. Now I just show them still in reverse chronological order, but I don't do any day grouping. It just seems to make more sense.

RSS is also in place for those who like to subscribe.

I've still got to work on the navigation on the top, and bring the other content areas online. Trackbacks are another area to drop in.

I hope you like the changes - they've been fun and not that much work. It just took a long time to get around to it.

After a Long Absence - October 23, 2007

MojoMark is back online - with a snazzy new seasonally appropriate design and a funky homegrown content management system!

There are lots of reasons for the long absence. Primarily burnout. I just didn't have the desire to keep it up. I also thought that the quality of what I was putting out was not very good. Maybe it was not good in the beginning, but I felt that it was getting worse.

But what I found recently is that I've been missing it. Several times lately I've thought to myself "that'd be good for the blog".

There are still lots of pieces that are not in place - comments, trackbacks, RSS, etc, and a number of items in the content system to fix. But the big parts are in place, so I can act on any inspiration and write up those "blog worthy" events.

Hopefully, I'll make this a habit, keep it short and tight, while improving the overall quality of the content.
