AP Headline Writers on Strike? - November 30, 2007
I use Yahoo as my home page. I configure the page with a number of widgets that help me keep abreast of the days news events.
I've got news widgets for AP Top Stories, Yahoo Baseball, AP Sports, E! Online entertainment, AP Business, Yahoo Most Viewed and "Oddly Enough with Reuters" (because Reuters is not really a credible news source is it?).
While I know that there is a writers strike going on, I wonder if this headline from AP Top Stories was a victim of the writers spending a little too much time on the picket lines.
Turkey plane crash kills all 57 on board
Was it a plane full of turkeys? or was it a plane shaped or painted like a turkey?
Leaves, Leaves, and More Friggin' Leaves! - November 05, 2007
Since it was a really nice weekend, we decided we would take advantage of it and do the yard work. Leaves seem to be much easier to deal without days of rain complicating the job.
Several hours, and a few temper tantrums later, we had 3 Home Depot leaf bags filled plus the standard yard debris container packed.
This is the third installment of raking and disposing of the leaves, and looking at the trees and the stubborn leaves that remain, we probably have at least two more days of heavy duty raking in our future.
Who thought deciduous trees were good idea? Oh yeah. That was me.
Pumpkin Patch - November 04, 2007
This year we went out to the Lakeview Farms pumpkin patch out in North Plains, just south of one of my favorite golf courses - apparently not coincendentally named - Pumpkin Ridge.
They have a corn maze, a train that takes you out to the patch, and a boat that will bring you back across their watering hole. As the boats motor across the waterway, mechanical dragons rise menacingly and even a shark pops out of the water as if this was Universal Studios northwest. Frankly I was a little concerned about whether the motors on the barges would hold together, but apparently there were no mechanical wildlife induced boating mishaps this year.
They also have a little caterpillar ride for the kiddies. This caterpillar is a 4x4 ATV pulling 55 gallon barrels with a hole cut out and attached to trailer hitches.
Kind of rickety if you ask me but, what's a parent to do? Say no?
Singing in the Shower - November 03, 2007
My kids make me laugh everyday. Probably because I like to make them laugh everyday.
Last night, Sara was singing in the shower. Not the latest Hannah Montana (beware: that link plays music automatically) song or some other Radio Disney "play it until you hate it" teeny bopper musical selection, but her own interpretation of "I've been workin' on the Railroad".
I am washing my booooooo-teee,
Washing it with soap.
Now I'm washing my belly,
Trying to get clean.
Making up the words on the fly.... just like her Mommy.
All Hallows Eve - November 01, 2007
The trick or treaters were out in force last night. Most of the kids were well behaved and did the right thing. As candy giver, I demand proper etiquette. Which means they have to say "Trick or Treat" (a "Happy Halloween" will suffice) and be in a costume. Sometimes I have to ask what the costume is, but anybody just trolling the neighborhood for candy gets the pink tootsie rolls - Yuck!
Garrett was in the Power Ranger outfit, and Sara went with the Daphne (from Scooby Doo) outfit, but without the go-go boots and the pink wig. That was a departure from the school party where she went in glittery cocktail dress. I guess the nighttime requires the shorter skirt.
The weather cooperated and it was a nice, although cool evening for a walk. The knocks at the door started a little after 6pm and finished up just after 8. I think that timeframe is pretty consistent with prior years even though the lack of the normal "fall back" time change has usually happened by now.
The candy haul was pretty good, but I'm starting to wonder if our chosen handouts are inappropriate for the neighborhood. We gave out mini-tootsie pops and tootsie rolls which varied significantly with the brand name chocolate bars that ended up in Garrett and Sara's collection.
Now the real trick is for me to sneak into the kids collections and get my own treats!
